Frankfurt is the most sustainable city in the world, according to the Sustainable Cities Index. London ranks second, followed by Copenhagen. Index authors chose 50 cities worldwide to cover several levels of economic development, expected growth and sustainable development challenges.
The Sustainable Cities Index ranking is based on 20 indicators in five key areas: economy, business, risk, infrastructure and finance. Results are also further divided by three sub-indexes – social, environmental and economic – which together determine how sustainable each city is.
Frankfurt is known as a major international financial center, but also as a transport node.
In the past 25 years, the city has set up its own agency for energy and is a founding member of the Alliance Climate European Cities, pledging to reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide by 10% each year, which means that it will reach an emission reduction of 50% by 2030.
The municipality aims for all energy consumed to come from renewable sources by 2050, which means a 95% reduction in emissions.
Seven of the top ten sustainable cities are in Europe.
The less sustainable cities are cities with fast economic growth in Asia: Jakarta ranked 45th, Manila 46th, Mumbai 47th, 48th is Wuhan, New Delhi 49th, while Nairobi occupied the last place.
